The activity purpose is to improve the knowledge and clinical skills of community primary care providers that treat children and adolescents with mental health. With both a national and Texas shortage of Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists, there is a great need for pediatricians to treat children with mental health. This series seeks to provide education to help those practitioners best identify mental health issues, develop care plans, and treat their patients, as well as how to identify when a referral to a psychiatric provider may be best for patient safety/care.

Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is a comprehensive public health approach for delivering early intervention and treatment services to people with, or at risk of developing substance use disorders.Screening: Screening is a way to identify patients with risky substance use patterns. It does not establish definitive information about diagnosis and possible treatment needs. The goal of SBIRT is to make screening for risky substance use a routine part of medical care to help identify those who may not seek help on their own.

Because pain is frequently encountered in the palliative and hospice care environments, a knowledge of appropriate diagnosis and alleviation is vital to all members of the interdisciplinary team. A comprehensive discussion of these topics will provide the knowledge base necessary for all members of the interprofessional team to better understand the varied needs of their patients during the end-of-life period and to be better equipped to address those needs.97143ASWB 77143

It is estimated that 95% of severe intracranial injuries and 64% of all head injuries in children 1 year of age or younger are caused by violence inflicted by parents or caretakers. Abusive head trauma (AHT) is a spectrum, ranging from mild injury from sub-lethal abuse that can cause lethargy, irritability, poor feeding, and/or vomiting occurring for days or weeks, to the most severe injury leading to coma and/or death. The great tragedy is that AHT, and especially shaken baby syndrome, is thought to be somewhat preventable through in-hospital and aftercare parent education programs.

We all possess innate biases that may cause us to treat patients differently without us even being aware of it. At the end of this course, you should be able to take a second look at instances in your patient interactions that might cause misunderstandings. It is important to be able to identify ways that we can, within ourselves, our hospitals and our healthcare systems, reduce disparities in healthcare.
