Opioid analgesics are approved by the FDA for the treatment of moderate or severe pain. However, individual patients differ greatly in clinical response to different opioid analgesics, and patient populations show widely variable response to the same opioid and dose. These response variations make opioid prescribing challenging. Further, the important role of opioid analgesics is broadly accepted in acute pain, cancer pain, and palliative and end-of-life care, but it is controversial for the management of chronic noncancer pain.

The role of implicit biases on healthcare outcomes has become a concern as some cite that implicit biases contribute to health disparities, professionals' attitudes toward and interactions with patients, quality of care, diagnoses, and treatment decisions. This course will explore definitions of implicit and explicit bias, the nature and dynamics of implicit biases, and how they can affect health outcomes. Because implicit biases are unconscious, strategies will be reviewed to assist in raising professionals' awareness of and interventions to reduce them.

Today, some label human trafficking as a form of "modern day slavery," and frequently, human trafficking has been linked to sex work, although there are other forms of trafficking, such as forced labor and domestic work. Human trafficking can involve women, men, and children. Its victims experience a host of psychological problems, including post-traumatic stress, helplessness, and depression, due to the physical, sexual, and psychological abuse they have experienced. This course encompasses a basic overview of human trafficking.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, remote patient monitoring (RPM) was emerging as a promising way to improve outcomes for individuals with chronic diseases. This module will look at the benefits for both patients and clinical practice, which patients may benefit most, and ways for the healthcare team to overcome potential barriers in implementing remote patient monitoring within clinical practice.

Once identified, the healthcare team helps individuals manage their hypertension through weight and stress management, adhering to low-sodium diets, increasing physical activity, and taking prescribed medications. Current estimates show that only about 1/4 of people with hypertension have their hypertension controlled.
