HSC Center for Older Adults: 2023-25 Telemedicine: Addressing Barriers for Special Populations

Telemedicine visits for older adults and younger people with disabilities will differ based on sites such as in the general community, independent living communities, assisted living, memory care communities, and skilled nursing facilities. This module explores providing telemedicine care to patients in these different settings.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, ambulatory clinic nurses, clinical pharmacists, certified public health professionals, social workers, physical therapists, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, and psychologists.

Learning Objectives

When you complete this module, you will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the benefits and limitations of telemedicine. 
  • Identify ways to overcome barriers to successful telemedicine visits. 
  • Describe ways to gather information to augment telemedicine visits, maximizing the roles of the healthcare team.  
  • Increase confidence in meeting patient needs via telemedicine and identifying when a higher level of care is needed.
