Obesity currently affects more than 41% of adults in the United States. It is a complex and chronic medical condition that is often associated with reduced quality of life in the absence of appropriate care and the development of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and other comorbidities. Once considered a condition caused by poor eating habits and lack of self-control or will power, obesity is now recognized as a disease that calls for long-term medical management and often requires pharmacotherapeutic intervention for adequate weight control.

Healthcare disparities disproportionately affect minoritized and low-income groups, contributing to poor health outcomes. Patient-provider distrust, knowledge gaps, and lack of shared decision making contribute to health disparities in these patient groups and influence disease outcomes. It is critical for clinicians to understand the social determinants of health impacting IBD patient care and develop strategies to reduce disparities. In addition, implicit bias significantly affects clinician-patient interaction, as well as diagnosis and treatment decisions.
