You might be surprised that your post-operative patients require fewer oral pain medications than you think.  Many patients are first exposed to opioids in a surgical setting.  A rather shocking statistic is that approximately 6% of surgical patients who are prescribed opioids become long-term users.  This course will describe the benefits of reduced or eliminated opioid use post-operatively.

There are a variety of primary and secondary uses for benzodiazepines. However, regardless of how clinicians or patients use them, benzodiazepines should be a short-term intervention. They are usually not recommended for use as long-term or permanent treatment solutions. This course will provide learners with information on the primary and secondary uses of benzodiazepines and an overview of their advantages when used appropriately. The course content will also discuss the risks associated with misuse and alternate treatment methods.

Thyroidectomies involve meticulous dissection of a highly vascularized organ and complications may develop, such as hematoma, hypocalcemia, and even hypoparathyroidism. Because some of these complications may be fatal, the authors sought to identify the differences in postthyroidectomy outcomes when the use of a vessel sealant device (VSD) such as LigaSure or Harmonic scalpel is compared with more traditional techniques, such as ligatures and clips.

A set of clinical tools, guidelines, and recommendations are now available for prescribers who treat pain patients with opioids.
