The gender and sexual minority (GSM) population is a diverse group that can be defined as a subculture. It includes homosexual men, lesbian women, bisexual persons, transgender individuals, and those questioning their sexual identity, among others. While assessment of the subculture and identification of culturally competent health promotion strategies have been delayed for many reasons, the health promotion needs of GSM individuals of various ages are appearing with more frequency in professional literature.

The goal of this course is to examine working in and with rural communities and the need for culturally sensitivity and competence. Health, mental health, and social work service disparities, barriers to help-seeking, and specific issues relevant to various subpopulations will be explored. Ethical issues unique to working within rural communities will also be discussed.

It exacts a significant burden on patients because it is associated with not only greater morbidity and mortality, but also a faster cognitive and functional decline. This activity reviews pharmacological treatment options, both a newly approved agent that is the first ever to be indicated specifically for the treatment of agitation associated with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease and also an array of agents in development.
