Urgent Encounters: Acute Infections in Primary Care

Primary care clinicians are often the first point of contact for patients presenting with acute infection. This case-based session will cover a practical approach to common infections in the urgent care setting. We will address clinical challenges and offer tips and tricks for the busy clinician.

Learning Objectives

  • Decide when to initiate antibiotics for purulent soft tissue infections
  • Compare the risks and benefits of different oral antibiotic options for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Describe Lyme disease management at different stages of infection
  • Discuss how to use and interpret common tests for infections in the urgent care setting
  • Consider “do not miss diagnoses” when evaluating patients with presumed infections
