Recognizing Misuse or Abuse of Controlled Substances
Many state medical licensing boards have already or will soon require healthcare professionals to complete mandated continuing education that addresses prescribing controlled substances. Misuse and abuse of prescribed controlled substances can lead to serious consequences, including addiction and overdose. Understanding the signs of abuse of medications such as opioids, sedatives, and stimulants is important to safe prescribing of controlled substances. This course will teach healthcare providers about substance use disorder and how to identify signs and symptoms of misuse and abuse. The course will also discuss a safe and effective approach to managing patients with substance use disorder.
The goal of this course is to educate healthcare providers on substance use disorder and how to identify patients who are misusing or abusing controlled substances.

Learning Objectives
- Indicate the definition, prevalence, risk factors, and consequences of substance use disorder.
- Recognize common symptoms and findings of patients who misuse or abuse common controlled substances such as opioids, sedatives, and stimulants.
- Name ways in which healthcare professionals can collaborate to intervene, assist, or treat patients abusing prescription opioids, sedatives, or stimulants.
