Real Psychiatry: An Update on ADHD & Substance Use Disorder for Advanced Practice Professionals

In recent years, there have both been many challenges and advancements in the treatment of ADHD and substance use disorder (SUD) that significantly influence the way advanced practice professionals navigate day-to-day practice. In this program, watch nurse practitioners at the forefront of managing these disorders discuss common obstacles they encounter when prescribing stimulants (e.g., medication shortages, potential for misuse or abuse) and navigate the nuanced differences between the many stimulant formulations for ADHD. From there, shift your focus to the pressing issue of the opioid epidemic as faculty compare the roles, routes of administration, therapeutic impacts, and clinical experience with partial opioid agonists and antagonists to gain valuable insights into managing both SUD and opioid overdose.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the educational activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss common challenges (e.g., medication shortages, misuse, addiction) in the prescription of stimulants for ADHD and create clinical strategies (e.g., drug monitoring) for their mitigation and/or resolution
  • Differentiate methods of long-acting stimulant delivery systems (e.g., prodrug, ion exchange) to better individualize treatment selection of modern ADHD therapies
  • Evaluate key differences (e.g., mu opioid receptor activity, route of administration) between pharmacologic options for the treatment of opioid use disorder and acute opioid overdose to formulate customized treatment strategies based on individual patient needs
