PTSD 101: PTSD and Aging

Older adults with PTSD face unique challenges with comorbid physical/mental health problems and cognitive decline. Age-related factors interact with PTSD symptoms and associated problems.

The purpose of this knowledge-based course is to review the prevalence/incidence of PTSD and describe the role of aging and cognitive impairment in PTSD among older adults, and based on data from Veteran sample, recommendations and cautions for clinical assessment and treatment in older adults with PTSD are presented.

Learners will be provided an overview of PTSD and aging, the prevalence of trauma and PTSD in older adults, progression of PTSD and other negative consequences, and an assessment and treatment in older adults and next steps in research.
