The Opioid Epidemic: History, Treatment Options & Combating the Crisis

The purpose of this course is to evaluate the scope of the opioid abuse epidemic in the United States with statistical data gathered from government and research outlets, and then open up a discussion of the ways both pharmacists and the pharmaceutical industry can help combat the epidemic. Emphasis will be placed on pharmacists' corresponding responsibility, and both current-market and developmental abuse-deterrent formulation technology, along with FDA programs to facilitate and expedite the production of these drugs.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, users should have a solid understanding of the steps they can take as pharmacists to help prevent opioid abuse, and the ways that the industry and government are working in tandem to lower the rate of abuse through rescheduling of controlled substances and developing abuse-deterred drug products.
