The Opioid Epidemic and the Clinical Prescriber: Responses to Opioid Over-Prescribing

This on-demand course has been approved by the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board as meeting the requirements for the two-hour continuing education course on responsible opioid prescribing per Med 13.03(3) of the Wisconsin Administrative Code.

Prior to viewing the presentation, participants must complete a brief pre-test. Participants view the presentation and listen to the synchronized audio of the recorded lecture. After viewing the presentation, participants must complete an evaluation and a post-test in which they must answer at least 75% of the answers correctly in order to receive AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The participant cannot proceed to request credit until this score is achieved.

This activity is designed for Primary Care Physicians, Specialty Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, Nurses, Social Workers, Professional Staff

  1. Describe the role of physicians and other prescribers in the evolution of the opioid epidemic
  2. Outline the role of licensure boards in influencing licensees’ clinical performance regarding opioids

Michael Michel Miller, MD

Michael M. Miller, MD, DFASAM, FAPA is the Medical Director of the Herrington Recovery Center of Rogers Memorial Hospital, a psychiatric and addiction specialty hospital in Oconomowoc, WI; prior to that, he led a comprehensive addiction medicine service for a nationally acclaimed general hospital in Madison, WI for over 20 years. He is board certified in general psychiatry and addiction psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and in addiction medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. 

Doctor Miller is also a Clinical Adjunct Professor for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and Assistant Clinical Professor for the Medical College of Wisconsin.

This activity has been pre-approved for ABIM, ABA, ABP, ABOHNS, ABO, and ABPath MOC Part II credit. Approval for MOC Part II credit by other ABMS Boards may be found here. Participants who complete the activity by Dec. 3, 2021, will have their MOC credit submitted for 2021; after Dec. 3, 2021, MOC credits will be submitted for 2022.

1.5 ABA MOC Part II Credit   This activity contributes to the patient safety CME requirement for Part II: Lifelong Learning and SelfAssessment of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) redesigned Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® (MOCA®), known as MOCA 2.0®. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.

1.5 ABO MOC Part II Credit   Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, earns credit toward the Lifelong Learning requirement(s) for the American Board of Ophthalmology’s Continuing Certification program.
