LGBTQ+ Patient Care

Marginalized groups, including the LGBTQ+ population, are often more susceptible to health disparities, putting them at higher risk for disease and death.

Family physicians are increasingly called upon to provide compassionate and individualized care to this diverse community. The LGBTQ+ Patient Care course is designed to help family physicians improve awareness of critical issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community and provide better health care for these patients.

Topics include:

  • General and preventive care
  • Peripartum care
  • Health inequalities for LGBTQ+ youth (including patient engagement)
  • Trauma-informed care
  • HIV prevention utilizing telemedicine

Learning Objectives

At the end of the activity, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the health issues that disproportionally impact LGBTQ+ patients across various stages of life.
  • Identify strategies to reduce health disparities among this population.
  • Develop a plan to provide a welcoming and supportive practice setting.
  • Provide culturally competent medical care to patients who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, and other gender identities and sexual orientations.
