Integrating Digital Approaches for Treatment of Substance Use Disorders

This 2-hour, online course is intended to provide an overview of digital approaches available in the field of substance use disorder and recommend how to evaluate for integration into practice as an adjunct to other evidence-based treatments.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an intense proliferation of technological advances for addressing substance use disorders (SUD). The quality of the solutions varies, and those who treat SUD lack a comprehensive source of reliable information to best evaluate, use and potentially not use solutions. This course is intended to provide an overview of digital approaches available in the field of SUD and recommend how to evaluate for integration into practice as an adjunct to other evidence-based treatments.

The target audience for this introductory level activity is behavioral health providers.

This activity addresses the following ACGME Competencies: Patient Care, Medical Based Knowledge, Practice Based Learning.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

  1. Define basic terminology related to digital approaches in SUD, including digital therapeutics, measurement-based care, apps, and telemedicine.  
  2. Understand the landscape of digital approaches for SUD treatment, including the distinction between wellness apps, monitoring tools, and therapeutics.  
  3. Evaluate digital tools that are evidence-based and differentiate the quality of various tools.
  4. Identify patient characteristics that make use of digital approaches appropriate.
  5. Examine best practices for implementing digital tools into practice to supplement the current evidence-based treatments.
