HIV/AIDS 1 Hour Update For Florida Health Professionals
This is a 1 hour activity designed for home study by healthcare clinicians. Specifically designed to meet the 1 hour HIV/AIDS continuing education requirement for Florida health professionals’ initial licensure. Information regarding the prevention, transmission, control, diagnosis and treatment of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is provided. The legal aspects for Florida health care professionals are also discussed. New antiviral agents and use and clinical trial data are continually reshaping the therapeutic management of this infection.
Target Audience
This course is designed to provide HIV/AIDS continuing education for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, and other health professionals. This course is designed to meet the 1 hour HIV/AIDS continuing education requirement for health professionals licensed in the state of Florida.
Learning Objectives
After the completion of this course, the learner should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology, immunopathogenesis, and diagnosis of AIDS.
- Identify methods of HIV transmission and prevention techniques.
- Explain the difference between HIV and AIDS including clinical management.
- Cite strategies for preventing the spread of HIV and treatment modalities.
- Describe laboratory tests utilized in the diagnosis and management of HIV/AIDS.
- Discuss Florida Law as it relates to HIV testing.
Additional Information
Jonathan S. Holman, B.S., Pharm. D.
Dr. Holman has extensive experience as a clinical pharmacist in adult intensive are and has held clinical management roles in medical centers. Dr. Holman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Colorado and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical university of South Carolina. He is a certified CME Professional from the National Commission for Certification of CME Professionals, Inc.

Virginia McCarty, RN, CIC, LHRM
Ms. McCarty is a diploma graduate nurse with certification in infection control and healthcare risk management. She is a member of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) and Florida Risk Managers Association. Ms. McCarty has extensive background in teaching healthcare professionals the principles of infection control, OSHA blood borne pathogens, hazardous waste management, risk management and documentation.
