A Garden of Earthly Delights: Evaluating OTC Options for Pain Management
Nutraceuticals, including dietary supplements and food alternatives, have become popularized as alternative treatments to many pain conditions. Over-the-counter medications (OTC) are readily available for patients to self-treat, and pain from osteoarthritis is one of the common indications patients may seek OTC care is for is pain from osteoarthritis. In these situations, the patients are often older adults who are generally more vulnerable to intolerances and adverse effects. It is important to understand the potential benefits of OTC options, including agents like acetaminophen and nonsteroidals, nutraceuticals like collagen and turmeric, and others whichthat have become more mainstream, like cannabis and kratom. Using the backdrop of a patient seeking OTC analgesia for chronic osteoarthritis pain, this session will explore the evidence, risks, and benefits of OTC medications and nutraceuticals.
