
Emergency Response: Safer Opioid Prescribing in the Emergency Department
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be better able to:
- Understand the role of the ED in the opioid crisis
- Identify types of pain and factors influencing the pain experience
- Describe multimodal strategies in addressing pain
- Discuss strategies for pain management in patients with acute pain, chronic pain and those on long term opioid therapy
- Manage patients with concurrent pain and opioid misuse
- Assess patients at risk for opioid-related harm and opioid misuse
- Develop emergency department policies and procedures for safer opioid use
