Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Minor Hand Emergencies: What Every Primary Care Physician Would Like to Know

This course will enable the learner to confidently diagnose and treat minor hand emergencies, adequately stabilize and triage more complex emergencies, and recognize the very serious, though sometimes  misdiagnosed, urgent emergencies that require immediate recognition and referral.

Learning Objectives

We use our hands at work and play. Our hands bring us enjoyment but are frequently injured. Timely recognition and treatment of common hand and upper extremity injuries and emergencies help return our patients to full productivity. This course will enable the learner to confidently diagnose and treat minor hand emergencies, adequately stabilize and triage more complex emergencies, and recognize the very serious, though sometimes  misdiagnosed, urgent emergencies that require immediate recognition and referral. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Recognize and diagnose treatment patterns;
  • Treat, stabilize, and triage more common emergencies;
  • Understand major limb threatening emergencies that may initially seem trivial.

Dr. David Netscher practices plastic surgery and hand surgery. He is board certified in plastic surgery and hand surgery, and is clinical professor at Baylor College of Medicine in the Division of Plastic Surgery and Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Netscher is a current Director of both American Board of Plastic Surgery and American Board of Surgery and sits on the Conjoint Board of Hand Surgery. He is actively involved in teaching and on national plastic and hand surgery societies.

Manas Nigam, MD
Manas Nigam, MD, is a fellow in Hand Surgery at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Georgetown University.  His academic interests include nerve repair/reconstruction and systems / quality improvement.
