Dermatology and COVID-19 in the Outpatient Setting: What Clinicians Need to Know

Patients with inflammatory skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are at greater risk for infection or complications from COVID-19 due to their high-risk comorbidities and use of immunosuppressive medications. These patients require specialized care during this time to reduce their risk of exposure and infection.

This activity, “Dermatology and COVID-19 in the Outpatient Setting: What Clinicians Need to Know” will provide dermatology clinicians with the most up-to-date guidance on managing patients with inflammatory skin conditions during the current pandemic, including information on the pathophysiology of Sars-Cov-2, the risk of infection in these patients, and strategies to manage patient care and counsel through telemedicine.

Target Audience

The intended audience for this educational initiative is dermatologists and other clinicians who treat patients with inflammatory skin conditions. This enduring webcourse will allow easy access to information essential to these healthcare providers nationwide.

Learning Objectives

The proposed initiative is designed to address ACGME and NAM competencies, including delivering patient-centered care and practicing evidence-based medicine.

This program is designed to address ACPE competencies, including foundational knowledge, and approach to practice and care 

At the conclusion of this education, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the most current understanding of the pathophysiology of COVID-19
  • Recognize and evaluate factors that increase risk of COVID infection among patients with inflammatory skin conditions
  • Integrate recommendations for the safe and effective management of patients with inflammatory skin conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • Provide counsel to dermatology patients regarding concerns or fears related to COVID-19

J. Morgan Freiman, MD, MSc is an Infectious Diseases physician and the Director for the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, MA. She trained in infectious diseases and epidemiology at Boston Medical Center and Boston University School of Public Health, prior to joining the faculty at Tufts Medical School. Steven A. Scott PharmD is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice and Director of Alumni Engagement in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the Purdue University College of Pharmacy. He received his BS in pharmacy and doctor of pharmacy degrees from Purdue University in 1976 and 1978, respectively, and then completed a hospital pharmacy residency at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. Dr. Scott’s first academic appointment was at the University of Houston and he then assumed an affiliate clinical faculty role at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis in 1980. Following seven years of clinical practice in pediatrics, he moved to the main Purdue campus in West Lafayette where he has practiced in both internal medicine and long-term care settings. Current teaching and scholarly interests include dermatologic therapeutics, men’s health issues, population health, programmatic and individual student assessment, and enhancing leadership development in students. Dr. Scott routinely serves as a preceptor for students on both his academic and leadership APPE rotations where he focuses on passing along both wisdom and knowledge. In addition to his current role as chair of the Orientation Steering Committee, Dr. Scott has previously served on the college’s Curriculum, Admissions, and Assessment Committees. His scholarship currently focuses in the areas of dermatologic therapeutics, student and leadership development, and pharmacy education.

Dr. Scott has been a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) since 1985. Dr. Scott was elected to the AACP Board of Directors (2013-2016) and to serve as chair of the Council of Faculties (2014-2015) and was elected to another 3-year term on the Board of Directors and serving as AACP President in 2017-18. He currently serves on AACP’s Argus Commission and the Leadership Development Task Force. In addition to his involvement with AACP, Dr. Scott currently serves on the Executive Committee of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education, and has been a long term member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, serving as the ASHP faculty liaison for the college. He currently serves as faculty advisor the Purdue University-Alpha Zeta Chapter of the Rho Chi Honor Society.

Dr. Scott has been married for 42 years to his wife, Cathy. Together they have two adult children and four grandchildren. In his leisure time, Dr. Scott enjoys traveling to quiet and relaxing locations, following Purdue sports, attending his grandchildren’s events and activities, pursuing his love for history through reading, and keeping in touch with hundreds of his former students.
