Cultural Competency in Counseling

This course is designed to help practitioners look inward to determine how their own perceptions, experiences, and personal values influence how they interact with the clients that they serve and how they can develop stronger relationships with their clients by understanding and affirming diverse cultural perspectives.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this continuing education activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Provide a working definition of cultural competence
  2. Define race, ethnicity, and cultural identity
  3. Describe the importance of cultural competence and how it can be achieved
  4. Identify core competencies for mental health professionals related to cultural responsiveness
  5. Describe the elements of culturally responsive evaluation and treatment planning
  6. Identify the benefits of cultural competence for clients, practitioners, and mental health organizations
  7. Describe ways in which mental health practitioners can pursue cultural competence within their organization
