Cultural Competence and Telehealth

Overview

Telemental health clinicians should continuously develop their cultural competence to remain ethically compliant. By doing so, you will improve rapport with clients and ensure that cultural needs are met throughout the treatment process. Providing telehealth services often requires that clinicians work with clients outside the clinician’s own community which requires more attentiveness to cultural differences.

In this course, you will learn about:

  • Cultural competence and cultural humility
  • How bias and privilege can affect the therapeutic experience
  • Disparities in the use of telehealth
  • Health and digital literacy
  • Ways to design and use technology that supports telehealth utilization and is client-centered

Improving cultural competence on a consistent basis can help your clients feel seen and heard during your telemental health sessions.

Learning Objectives

  • Define cultural competence and cultural humility as it relates to ethical professional practice.
  • Adapt technology, assessment, and treatment services to fit specific cultural needs.
