Common Osteoarthritic Conditions of the Hand: Diagnosis and Management

Common clinical presentations of osteoarthritis of the hand and wrist is discussed, including the diagnosis and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis at various anatomic sites.

Learning Objectives

This course will cover the very common clinical presentations of osteoarthritis of the hand and wrist and  will include discussion of the diagnosis and pathogenesis of osteoarthritis at various anatomic sites. Where relevant, we will also present surgical options, and particularly when to refer symptomatic patients for a surgical opinion. At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Recognize the radiographic differences between osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis;
  • Understand the clinical presentations of osteoarthritis in the hand and wrist; 
  • Know what surgical options are available for symptomatic patients.

Dr. David Netscher practices plastic surgery and hand surgery. He is board certified in plastic surgery and hand surgery, and is clinical professor at Baylor College of Medicine in the Division of Plastic Surgery and Department of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Netscher is a current Director of both American Board of Plastic Surgery and American Board of Surgery and sits on the Conjoint Board of Hand Surgery. He is actively involved in teaching and on national plastic and hand surgery societies.

Jeffrey Trost, MD
Jeff Trost, MD is a Plastic Surgery resident at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He is pursuing a hand fellowship with the hope of establishing a career in upper extremity reconstruction
