Clinical Outcomes of Noninvasive Ventilation in Asthma, Bronchiectasis, and Other COPD
In this study, the authors sought to determine clinical outcomes, prevalence, patient profiles and systems characteristics associated with the use of NIV in patients with asthma, bronchiectasis, and other COPD.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) appears to be associated with a significant decrease in frequency of exacerbation, hospital admissions, and mortality in patients with COPD.
In this study, the authors sought to determine clinical outcomes, prevalence, patient profiles and systems characteristics associated with the use of NIV in patients with asthma, bronchiectasis, and other COPD. At the conclusion of the activity, learners should be better prepared to:
- Recognize the role of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) for therapy of patients with various forms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
- Recognize the potential benefits of expanded use of NIV for more subtypes of COPD.
- Utilize NIV for outpatient and inpatient therapy of greater numbers of patients with COPD.
- Recognize that NIV generally has lower morbidity compared to invasive mechanical ventilation and may lead to better outcomes due to the lower morbidity / mortality associated with NIV when used for various forms of COPD.
