Benzodiazepines and the Diagnosis and Treatment of Anxiety Disorders

This course will help providers understand the pharmacology of benzodiazepines and the clinical indications in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for Physicians, Physician Assistants and Advanced Nurse Practitioners who are certified to prescribe controlled substances. 

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the pharmacologic profiles of benzodiazepines, opiates and other controlled drugs specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders.

J. Luke Engeriser, MD

Dr. Luke Engeriser is an assistant professor and residency training director for the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, department of psychiatry.  Before entering medical school, he completed a master of arts in divinity at the University of Chicago and worked as a teacher of English in Torun, Poland.  He attended medical school at Northwestern University in Chicago and completed his psychiatry residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI.  At Fort Benning, GA, he was chief of the department of behavioral health. 
After the Army, Dr. Engeriser was medical director of a mental health center in Rockland, Maine.  He has served the past three years on the executive council of the Alabama Psychiatric Physicians Association.  Dr. Engeriser is board certified in adult psychiatry, and his academic interests include treatment of combat veterans and spiritual/religious issues in psychiatry.
