Benzodiazepine Uses and Side Effects

This course provides 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit for license renewal, and this activity will focus on the proper administration of Benzodiazepine and its adverse effects to weigh the risk versus benefit for each patient. It also explains the potential for these drugs to be abused and misused and to cause addiction and physical dependence and provides ways to prevent such occurrences.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Discuss the FDA warnings concerning use of benzodiazepines.
  2. Review the efficacy and safety of the two intranasal benzodiazepines, diazepam (Valtoco) and midazolam (Nayzilam), for acute treatment of seizure clusters
  3. Review the efficacy and safety of remimazolam (Byfavo) for induction and maintenance of sedation for short procedures.
