Assessing and Addressing Barriers to ART Adherence

Because HIV is a chronic disease that requires lifelong treatment, it is essential that people living with HIV regularly visit their healthcare provider (HCP) and adhere to recommended treatment protocols. Newer types of potent antiretrovirals and their combinations, including once-daily treatment, have simplified treatment regimens and diminished side effects. Still, adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains unsatisfactory. Reasons for poor adherence are multifactorial; solutions can be complex and require the involvement of the multidisciplinary care team.

Join Johnathan Appelbaum, MD, and Rajesh Gandhi, MD, as they discuss data supporting the need for adequate adherence to ART for successful HIV outcomes and how HCPs can identify and help overcome barriers to adherence. The faculty examine 2 different case studies featuring individuals with HIV infection, as well as the unique characteristics and comorbidities of each that may potentially impact adherence, and provide their perspectives on how HIV clinicians can help mitigate some of these issues for optimal treatment outcomes.
