The American Opioid Crisis: Prescribing Controlled Substances in Tennessee

This activity is designed to change competence and performance in practice by examining protocols for physicians and other healthcare professionals to appropriately care for patients treated with controlled substances and to implement recommendations from the Tennessee Department of Health initiatives on opioid use.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals who are responsible for prescribing or managing controlled substances.

Learning Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe origins of the opioid epidemic, the scope of the crisis, and strategies for the future.

  2. Identify signs of substance addiction and substance dependence.

  3. Apply evidence-based prevention and treatment methods for opioid use disorder.
