Acute Pain and Opioid Use Disorder

In this education activity, you will receive specific guidance for managing pain in patients with opioid use disorder, with a focus on acute pain management for patients on chronic opioids and/or benzodiazepines, inclusive of medications for opioid use disorder and the use of buprenorphine for chronic pain in accordance with the 2022 CDC Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain.

Rhode Island Specific: This course qualifies for 1.0 hours of risk management credit.

This course can be counted toward the DEA licensure training requirement as noted in their 3/27/2023 communication. Course content aligns with SAMHSA’s content recommendations required by the 2022 Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act. A total of 8 hours is required. 

Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational initiative, the learner should be better able to:

  • Describe and apply knowledge of the importance of managing opioid withdrawal and pain
  • Describe and apply the updated recommendations for acute pain management for patients on medication for opioid use disorder
  • Demonstrate knowledge of non-opioid options for analgesia
  • Explain the importance of addressing both withdrawal and acute pain needs for patients with opioid dependence
