The CME series is designed to streamline the continuing medical education requirements of the Texas Medical Board.
Completion of this program will satisfy the new professional credentialing requirements for two (2) hours on Pain Management/Opioids and one (1) hour on HHSC Approved Human Trafficking Training.

This course is designed for all physicians and other health care providers licensed in the state of Texas.
Learning Objectives
Course One: Opioid Analgesics in the Management of Acute & Chronic Pain
- Completion of this course will better enable the course participant to:
- Discuss the fundamental concepts of pain management, including pain types and mechanisms of action of major analgesics.
- Identify the range of therapeutic options for managing acute and chronic pain, including non-pharmacologic approaches and pharmacologic (non-opioid and opioid analgesics) therapies.
- Explain how to integrate opioid analgesics into a pain treatment plan individualized to the needs of the patient, including counseling patients and caregivers about the safe use of opioid analgesics.
- Discuss recommendations for incorporating emergency opioid antagonists into prescribing practice, and for training patients and family members on the use of naloxone.
- Recognize the risks of addiction inherent in the use of opioids for both acute and chronic pain and identify strategies to mitigate risks of diversion and misuse.
- Identify medications currently approved for the treatment of opioid use disorder and the ways these medications differ in terms of mechanisms of action, regulatory requirements, and modes of administration.
Course Two: A Clinician's Guide to Recognizing and Responding to Human Trafficking in Texas
- Completion of this course will better enable the course participant to:
- Understand the types and venues of human trafficking in the United States
- Be better able to identify victims of human trafficking in health care settings
- Know the warning signs of human trafficking in health care settings for ad
Course Three: Preventing Clinician Burnout
- Completion of this course will better enable the course participant to:
- Describe the prevalence of physician stress, emotional distress, depression, and suicide.
- Explain at least three factors that can increase risk of physician emotional distress, and three factors that can mitigate or reduce risk of emotional distress.
- Identify technology-related factors related to physician emotional distress and strategies for addressing those factors.
- Describe interventions that physicians can engage in to improve resilience and wellness and reduce the risk of emotional distress
Course Four: Suicide Assessment & Prevention
- Completion of this course will better enable the course participant to:
- Assess a patient’s suicide risk and collaboratively determine the best treatment method.
- Describe strategies to minimize the risk of future suicide attempts.
- Explain the concept of patient-centered care in the context of suicide prevention.
- Describe the specific challenges of managing suicide in the population of Veterans and active-duty military personnel.
