Safe and Effective Prescribing of Controlled Substances for PAs and APRNs

This comprehensive course addresses the mandatory content for Physician Assistants and APRNs in Florida registered to prescribe Schedule II, III and/or IV controlled substances as allowed by Florida law, effective January 1, 2017. The course was originally presented during a FMA meeting on December 3, 2021.  The content of this 3-hour course encompasses the required course for all DEA-authorized prescribers in Florida, including allopathic physicians, osteopathic physicians, dentists, podiatrists, and optometrists. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completing this course and reviewing the resources, participants should be able to:

  • Identify specific challenges and risks that may be encountered in prescribing controlled substances like opiates
  • Describe the Schedules of Controlled Substances as set forth by the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration)
  • Implement best practices for proper prescribing of controlled substances, including appropriate uses for opiates
  • Clarify the benefits and risks of controlled substances, including risk of opioid addiction 
  • Follow the legal requirements for prescribing controlled substances 
  • Observe the standards of practice for prescribers required under Florida law
  • Describe various prescribing practices that will protect both patients and prescribers
  • Discuss available alternatives (pharmacological and non-pharmacological) to controlled substances, particularly opiates  
  • Recognize options for overdose treatment like prescribing of emergency opioid antagonists
