Controlled Substances Series: Drug Diversion Prevention
Prescription drug diversion is a serious problem and fuels the current US epidemic of drug misuse, abuse, and addiction. Healthcare practitioners need to be able to identify and prevent drug diversion in their practices, by patients or staff members. This course presents the different mechanisms used to divert drugs and strategies to detect and prevent diversion.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
- Explain the common methods used to divert drugs.
- Discuss the role of staff and patient education in drug diversion prevention.
- Implement safeguards to prevent and detect diversion of controlled substances, including the use of the prescription drug monitoring program.
- Recognize evasive or drug seeking behavior in patients.
