This 2- hour course will elucidate the climbing prevalence of opioids in drug abuse and drug-related fatalities in the United States. Participants will discern the nuanced differences between opiates and opioids, and will be introduced to examples of both natural and synthetic opioids. They will be informed about the major drivers behind the meteoric rise of opioid abuse and will explore the new diagnosis designated to opioid abuse and/or dependence in the DSM V. It will also spotlight the triad of symptoms specific to opioid overdoses.
