A Conversation with Dr. Michael Englesbe: Opioid Prescribing and the CDC’s Latest Recommendations

Dr. Errington Thompson, professor of surgery at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, and Dr. Michael Englesbe who is the Cyrenus G. Darling Sr., MD and Cyrenus G. Darling Jr., MD Professor and Head of Transplant Surgery at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC), as well as the Co-Director of the Opioid Prescribing and Engagement Network, discuss the CDC’s newest recommendations on opioid prescribing for pain management, as well possible strategies to reduce the total amount of opioids given to patients in the immediate postoperative period.

  • Describe strategies to reduce the total amount of opioids given to patients in the immediate postoperative period.
  • Understand multiple ways in which physicians were overprescribing opioids in several different scenarios.
  • Apply some of the CDC’s newest recommendations on opioid prescribing for acute, subacute, and chronic pain management.

Michael Englesbe, MD
Michael Englesbe, MD, FACS is the Cyrenus G. Darling Sr., MD and Cyrenus G. Darling Jr., MD Professor and Head of Transplant Surgery at the University of Michigan. He practices liver and kidney transplantation in children and adults. He is the portfolio director of the BCBSM supported Quality Collaboratives in Michigan. He is the Director of the Michigan Surgical Quality Collaborative (MSQC) and the Co-Director of the Opioid Prescribing and Engagement Network (OPEN). His primary research interest is in surgery and population health. He has funding for his work from the National Institute of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, and Michigan – Health and Human Services. He serves as a vice chair of the Department of Surgery – leading the surgical resident academic development time. He lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and 3 children.


Errington Thompson, MD
Errington C. Thompson, MD, an academic surgeon, is currently a professor of surgery at Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and also serves as the Director of Trauma Services. His academic career started at LSU in Shreveport in the mid-’90s. Dr. Thompson is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Board of Surgery, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the Southern Medical Association. He is dedicated to teaching, learning and continuing to improve every day. He has written over 50 medical articles and several book chapters. He has presented lectures at local, regional and national meetings. He is active in a number of service projects and initiatives. Currently, Dr. Thompson is focusing on improving resident education and creating an atmosphere of safety for patients.
